IEEE Hingorani Award Presented to Dr. Rahul Walawalkar for Work in Energy Storage

Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, President of the NetZero Energy Transition Association (NETRA), received the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s Hingorani Award. The award was presented at the 11th International Conference on Power Systems at IIT Hyderabad. It recognizes individuals who have advanced the power and energy sector.

Dr. Walawalkar has worked for over two decades in energy storage, policy development, and technical leadership. He contributed to economic models for demand response programs and pay-for-performance services at Carnegie Mellon University.

In India, he helped develop the National Energy Storage Mission and the ACC Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. He has collaborated with organizations including IRENA, the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the International Solar Alliance.

Under his leadership, NETRA has brought together industry, researchers, and policymakers to support the deployment of net-zero technologies. The timing of his recognition coincides with global efforts to decarbonize the energy sector. A senior official from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy stated that the award reflects India’s role in the global energy transition and that Dr. Walawalkar’s work is influencing engineers and policymakers in the sector.
