Solar power overtakes coal in EU electricity generation in 2024
In 2024, solar power surpassed coal in electricity generation in the European Union (EU) for the first time. According to the European Electricity Review by energy think tank Ember, solar energy accounted for 11% of the EU’s electricity mix, while coal’s share fell below 10%. This shift reflects ongoing changes in the EU’s power sector.

The EU’s power sector has been changing in alignment with the European Green Deal’s goals. Since 2019, renewable energy sources have increased their share from 34% to 47% in 2024, while fossil fuels have declined from 39% to 29%. Solar power, which saw a 22% growth in generation compared to 2023, remains the fastest-growing renewable energy source. Wind energy accounted for 17% of electricity generation, surpassing gas at 16%. These shifts have reduced the EU’s reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Ember’s analysis estimates that the additional wind and solar capacity installed over the past five years reduced the need to import 92 billion cubic meters of fossil gas and 55 million tonnes of coal, saving approximately €59 billion. Experts suggest that further efforts are needed to meet 2030 climate targets.

Dr. Chris Rosslowe, senior analyst and lead author of the Ember report, noted: “Fossil fuels are losing their grip on EU energy. At the start of the European Green Deal in 2019, few thought the EU’s energy transition could be where it is today; wind and solar are pushing coal to the margins and forcing gas into structural decline. While the EU’s electricity transition has moved faster than anyone expected in the last five years, further progress cannot be taken for granted. Delivery needs to be accelerated particularly in the wind sector, which has faced unique challenges and a widening delivery gap. However, the achievements of the past five years should instil confidence that, with continued drive and commitment, challenges can be overcome, and a more secure energy future be achieved.”
