Global Wave Energy Converter Market Projected to Reach $2.13 Billion by 2033: Report
The global wave energy converter (WEC) market is projected to reach $2.13 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.2% from 2024 to 2033, according to a report by Research Intelo. The market was valued at $645 million in 2024.
Wave energy converters capture energy from ocean waves and convert it into electricity. The report identifies increasing renewable energy demand, technological developments, government policies and investments as factors supporting market growth.
Europe accounted for more than 37% of the global market in 2024, supported by marine energy projects, research activities and government incentives. Countries including the UK, Portugal and Denmark have undertaken wave energy projects at different stages of development.
Asia Pacific is expected to register the fastest CAGR of 17.5% during the forecast period, driven by increasing electricity demand, policy support and investments in marine energy infrastructure. China, Australia and Japan are among the countries developing wave energy technologies.
Latin America, the Middle East and Africa also offer potential for wave energy deployment, particularly for off-grid electricity generation and desalination. However, financing, regulatory and technical challenges continue to affect project development.
The market includes several wave energy conversion technologies, such as Oscillating Water Column (OWC), Point Absorber, Attenuator, Overtopping Devices and submerged pressure differential systems. OWC systems have been used in several pilot and demonstration projects, while point absorbers are being developed for array-based offshore installations.
According to the report, power generation accounted for more than 70% of deployments in 2024, including grid-connected and standalone applications. Other uses include seawater desalination, marine monitoring, offshore aquaculture and environmental monitoring systems.
Technological developments include AI-based energy capture optimisation, predictive maintenance, corrosion-resistant materials, digital twin systems and hybrid wave-wind and wave-solar installations. These developments are aimed at improving equipment performance, reliability and operating costs.
The market includes companies such as Ocean Power Technologies, Carnegie Clean Energy, Eco Wave Power, Wave Swell Energy and CorPower Ocean, alongside other technology developers and research institutions such as AW-Energy, SINN Power, Wello, YAM Pro Energy, Seabased, Ocean Energy, Mocean Energy, Oscilla Power, Albatern, Bombora Wave Power, Aquamarine Power, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), AWS Ocean Energy, Bio Power Systems, and Fred. Olsen.
While wave energy projects are progressing through testing and demonstration stages, commercial deployment remains limited. The report identifies high initial investment costs, complex permitting processes, limited standardisation, financing constraints and specialised supply chain requirements as challenges affecting the sector.
Research Intelo expects continued technology development, policy support and industry partnerships to influence the commercial adoption of wave energy converters over the forecast period.
