India reaches 100 GW solar power capacity
India has crossed 100 GW of installed solar power capacity. This marks progress toward its goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, stated that, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India’s energy journey over the past ten years has been historic and inspiring. Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks and rooftop solar projects have brought about revolutionary changes. As a result, today India has successfully achieved the target of 100 GW of solar energy production. In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path”. He also mentioned that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is helping expand rooftop solar adoption for residential use.
India’s solar power capacity has grown substantially over the past decade, increasing from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100.33 GW as of January 31, 2025. Currently, 84.10 GW of solar projects are under implementation, and 47.49 GW are under tendering. Additional renewable energy projects, including hybrid and round-the-clock systems, are under development, with 64.67 GW under implementation and tendering. This brings the total capacity of solar and hybrid projects to 296.59 GW.
Solar power accounts for 47% of India’s total installed renewable energy capacity. In 2024, the country added 24.5 GW of solar capacity, doubling the installations from the previous year. Utility-scale solar installations reached 18.5 GW in 2024, representing a nearly 2.8-fold increase compared to 2023, with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh contributing significantly.
Rooftop solar installations grew by 4.59 GW in 2024, representing a 53% increase from 2023. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has facilitated nearly 9 lakh rooftop solar installations nationwide. India’s solar manufacturing capacity increased from 2 GW in 2014 to 60 GW in 2024. The government aims to achieve 100 GW of solar module production capacity by 2030.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing initiatives to expand renewable energy capacity, with the 100 GW solar power milestone representing progress in India’s energy transition.
